Trends of Obesity Research Using Active Herbal Components

Abstract
Objectives : The aim of this study was to contribute to the development of herbal extract active compound for obesity treatment by reviewing the studies of herbal extract active compounds and phytochemicals.

Methods : We searched the papers with keywords of obesity and/or herbal compound, herbal component, active compound, natural compound, phytochemical in the search site, Pubmed. And then, abstract-opened, natural compound articles were separated as an object of research.

Results : We reviewed 60 searched articles. ; 27 were studies animal experiment. 35 were cell study, 6 were about clinical trials. The herbs, used for obesity treatment, were Ginseng Radix Rubra, Rhei Rhizoma, Curcumae Longae Rhizoma et al. The phytochemicals for obesity treatment, were resveratrol. Betulinic acid, capsaicin et al. The mechanisms, of herbal active compounds and phytochemicals for obesity treatment, were lipogenesis, B-oxidation, differentiation, inflammation et al.

Conclusion : Through animal and cell studies and clinical research, the treatment of obesity with herbal active compound therapy was effective. For clinical use, however in is considered that in vivo and vitro studies andclinical trial`s connection using studies about more herbal active compounds and associated side effects of decrease appetite drugs are needed.
